The image shows an open book with a drawing of a man in a hat and a woman in a dress, both of whom appear to be witches. The book is open to a page with text and a few people in the background. The man in the hat is wearing a long, dark cloak and a pointed hat, while the woman in the dress is holding a staff in her right hand. Both of them have a mischievous expression on their faces, suggesting they are about to embark on a magical journey.

HBO Max Reboots Harry Potter With Fresh Cast and Deeper Storytelling for 2026

A fresh adaptation of the Harry Potter books is coming to HBO Max at Christmas 2026. The series will retell the story across multiple seasons, with each one covering a single book. New actors have been chosen to bring the beloved characters to life in a format that promises deeper storytelling than the original films.

The project will keep the films' familiar look but expand on cut plotlines and character arcs. Francesca Gardiner will lead as showrunner, while Mark Mylod directs the first season, adapting Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. The series will introduce a new main cast. Dominic McLaughlin takes on the role of Harry Potter, replacing Daniel Radcliffe. Alastair Stout will play Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton steps in as Hermione Granger, with both roles recast to better match the books' descriptions. Lox Pratt joins as Draco Malfoy, while Paapa Essiedu, John Lithgow, and Janet McTeer will portray Severus Snape, Albus Dumbledore, and Minerva McGonagall, respectively. Nick Frost will play Rubeus Hagrid, and Warwick Davis returns as Filius Flitwick, the only original actor reprising his role.

The casting choices aim to reimagine the characters with fresh perspectives. Newcomers like McLaughlin and Stanton were selected for their alignment with the books, while experienced actors such as Essiedu and Lithgow bring stage and screen credibility. The series also seeks to diversify the cast, though some decisions, like Essiedu's portrayal of Snape, have faced backlash.

Viewers will need HBO Max's 4K subscription tier, currently priced at €17 per month, to watch in full resolution. The platform plans to raise its subscription fee by one euro in January 2027, coinciding with the series' later episodes. J.K. Rowling remains involved as a producer, ensuring creative continuity with the original books.

Episodes will release weekly, starting with the premiere at Christmas 2026. The longer format allows for expanded storytelling, exploring subplots and character development that the films had to omit. The Harry Potter series will debut on HBO Max in late 2026, offering a new take on the magical world. With a mix of rising talent and established actors, the adaptation promises a deeper dive into the books' stories. Subscribers will need the 4K tier for the best viewing experience, with prices set to increase in early 2027.
