Haystack Fire in Bennewitz/Leulitz Closes Road; Former AfD Staffer Convicted for China Espionage
A haystack fire in Bennewitz/Leulitz near Leipzig on Tuesday afternoon led to a road closure and investigations. Meanwhile, a former employee of AfD Bundestag member Maximilian Krah was convicted for suspected espionage for China.
Several local fire departments managed to extinguish the haystack under control, temporarily closing the road between Polenz and Leulitz. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
In a separate development, Jian G., a former employee of Maximilian Krah, was sentenced to nearly five years in prison for spying and passing confidential documents to Chinese intelligence. He was found guilty of espionage and providing information on dissidents in his country of birth. The prosecutor is currently investigating Jian G. on suspicion of espionage for China.
The defendant's accomplice was also convicted and received a suspended sentence of one year and nine months. Both verdicts are not yet final, and investigations against Maximilian Krah continue. His immunity has been lifted by the Bundestag.
