Economic Struggles Fuelling AfD's Rise, Says Haseloff

Reiner Haseloff, the Minister President of Saxony-Anhalt, acknowledges that the economic situation is a significant concern for many residents, particularly in the eastern part of Germany. "People are questioning if their livelihood is secure, with the possibility that it could crumble underneath them again," Haseloff shared with the German Press Agency.

Haseloff highlighted the fact that some individuals have faced multiple job losses, bankruptcies, and the need to start over since the demise of the GDR. The uncertainty sparked by these issues has given rise to the popularity of radical parties like the AfD. "People are feeling extremely anxious, as they've already experienced these difficulties firsthand. This fear has a lasting impact," he explained.

According to a recent survey by the German Association of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (Germamaz), over 84% of businesses in Germany observed a decline in the economic situation over the past year. Nearly 43% of the businesses surveyed reported a deterioration in their own situation, while around 40% anticipate a continued decline in 2024.

Haseloff emphasized the responsibility of politicians to drive down energy prices and progress in integration. "The AfD is not comprised of better individuals. Instead, they're capitalizing on the public sentiment. Over the coming months, it's our job to demonstrate that we're offering solutions. We require clarity on both the economic context and immigration," he asserted.

Haseloff, who has served as minister president since 2011, remains the longest-serving head of government in Germany.

Further Insights:

  • The AfD's surge in popularity can be attributed to a complex mix of factors, including regional economic disparities, anti-immigration sentiment, perceived inefficacy of the central government, and extremist messaging.
  • Haseloff's primary focus is on addressing the economic concerns of the region, which include supporting energy-intensive industries like the Chemieindustrie. His Bundesratsinitiative aims to reduce energy prices and alleviate companies from gas storage fees.
