The AfD's Grip in Eastern Germany Stems from Economic Fears

The AfD, a right-wing populist party, has gained traction in some eastern German states, becoming the strongest force in polls. According to Reiner Haseloff, the Saxony-Anhalt's Minister-President, this popularity stems from economic fears and turmoil experienced by many East Germans since the fall of the GDR.

Haseloff, a CDU politician, points out that people in eastern Germany are grappling with doubts about their livelihoods' security. "They're asking themselves if their livelihood is still secure or if it could crumble beneath their feet once more," he said, referencing the hardships faced by individuals after the GDR's demise.

Uncertainty and Worry Trigger Radical Popularity

The current uncertainty and worry are key drivers for the AfD's popularity. People who have lived through various upheavals in the past, including redundancies and bankruptcies, are genuinely worried. "Uncertainty about these issues fuels the popularity that radical parties like the AfD are enjoying at the moment," Haseloff commented.

Economic Recession Fuels Concerns

An economic survey by the German Association of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (Mittelstandsvereinigung) revealed that more than 84% of SMEs believe that Germany's economic situation has deteriorated or worsened significantly over the past twelve months. Approximately 43% of SMEs stated that their company's situation has worsened as well, with around 40% expecting this trend to continue in 2024.

Highlighting the Role of Politicians

Haseloff believes that politicians hold the power to ease the situation by reducing energy prices and making progress in integration. "The AfD does not have the better people. They simply exploit the prevailing mood. However, we still have the power to change this over the next few months by making it clear that we are offering solutions," he said.

The strong performance of the AfD in eastern German states like Saxony-Anhalt has been attributed to the region's economic concerns, as highlighted by Haseloff. The governing parties, including the SPD, Greens, and FDP, have been unable to emerge from their polling slump, and the AfD has reaped the benefits with a top score of 23% in the RTL/ntv trend barometer.

Additional Perspectives

The AfD's success can be linked to several factors: economic and integration issues, anti-elite sentiment, immigration concerns, a populist communication strategy, and historical and cultural factors. Addressing these concerns through economic development, inclusive politics, social media engagement, immigration policy reforms, and coalition building are potential ways for politicians to reduce the party's influence.
