Fire put out at Schierke, Harz region. - Harz region's Schierke experiences forest blaze
After a five-hour battle, a forest fire in Schierke's rocky terrain of the Oberharz has been successfully snuffed out. The blaze consumed around 1.2 hectares on the Kleine Winterberg, a neighboring peak of Wurmberg in Lower Saxony. The Harz district relief center in Halberstadt and Wernigerode city confirmed this.
Initial reports suspect the fire to be a stubborn stubble blaze that burst into chaos due to the wind. The teams are now scouring the area for remaining hotspots, and the state forestry department is maintaining a constant fire watch.
A firefighting plane was deployed, and the flame was first spotted around 11:00 AM with roughly half a hectare engulfed. Fire crews from Saxony-Anhalt and Lower Saxony, along with the Harz district plane, were on-site. Water was sourced from Wurmberg lake, according to the city. An estimated 120 rescue workers put in their efforts, detouring travelers on the federal highway 27 between Elend and Braunlage.
The current forest fire danger level in the Harz National Park stands at three out of five. Due to fire concerns, steam locomotives on trips to the Brocken, the highest Harz peak, were benched from May 1st to 6th. However, as of May 7th, the steam locomotives have resumed their duties, a spokesperson announced.
