Many Guests Expected in the Harz - How to Handle the Crowds? - Harz Region Prepares for Winter Rush as Ski Resorts Fill Up Fast

The Harz region braces for a surge of visitors as winter weather draws crowds to its ski resorts. With schools in Lower Saxony closed for two days and Saxony-Anhalt's winter break starting soon, tourism officials expect heavy demand for accommodations and outdoor activities.

The influx began with Lower Saxony's midterm break on Monday and Tuesday, bringing day-trippers from cities like Hanover. Many are heading to popular high-altitude spots such as Braunlage and Sankt Andreasberg, where lodgings are already fully booked.

To ease congestion, the Harz Tourism Association suggests staying in lower-lying towns like Bad Harzburg, Goslar, or Wernigerode. From there, early risers can reach the slopes before queues build up. Evening sessions with floodlit runs also offer a quieter alternative for those willing to adjust their schedules.

The rush will likely intensify when Saxony-Anhalt's winter holidays begin on January 31, 2026, lasting until February 6. A full week off for students means even more families and outdoor enthusiasts may flock to the region.

Tourism officials have warned of limited availability in high-altitude resorts and busy slopes. Flexible planning and choosing less crowded times could help visitors make the most of their trips. The region's ski areas and surrounding towns are preparing for one of their busiest winter periods.
