Harshvardhan Sadgir clinches second Maharashtra Kesari title in dramatic 4-3 final
Harshvardhan Sadgir has claimed the Maharashtra Kesari title for the second time after a thrilling final in Wagholi, Pune. The 2026 victory came seven years after his first win in 2019, with Sadgir defeating Mahendra Gaikwad 4-3 in a closely fought match. The tournament, held over 37 days, drew large crowds and high-profile attendees, including state ministers and media outlets.
The final bout began with both wrestlers locked at 1-1 in the opening round. Sadgir took the lead in the second after Gaikwad received a penalty for passivity. He then extended his advantage with two more points, sealing the 4-3 win.
The event was organised by Ramkrishna Anna Satav Patil, who completed the tournament in 37 days with strong local backing. Both finalists trained under Arjuna Award-winning coach Kaka Pawar, adding prestige to the competition. Agriculture Minister Dattatray Bharne attended the final and praised the organisers, pledging continued state support for wrestlers. Education Minister Dada Bhuse also announced plans to establish special sports schools for young athletes. Media coverage from NDTV Marathi, Maharashtra Times, ABP Live, and Esakal highlighted the event's significance, while fans celebrated Sadgir's achievement. Despite the victory, Sadgir announced his retirement shortly after, expressing dissatisfaction and referencing Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in his remarks.
Sadgir's second Maharashtra Kesari win places him among only seven wrestlers to achieve the feat twice. The tournament's success, marked by ministerial attendance and widespread media coverage, underscores its growing importance in the state. His retirement announcement, however, adds uncertainty to the future of his wrestling career.
