WSOP Main Event 2025: Michael Mizrachi Makes History
The 2025 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event concluded with a historic moment as Michael Mizrachi secured the first-place prize and the prestigious title, becoming the first player to win both the Main Event and the Poker Players Championship in the same year.
The final table started with high stakes, as Daehyung Lee of South Korea went all-in on the very first hand, holding Ace-King. John Wasnock, the chip leader, called with Pocket Jacks in the big blind. The flop gave Wasnock a set of Jacks, while Lee had flopped top-pair, top-kicker. Despite some outs on the turn, Lee's equity was only 9%. The river did not help him, and he was eliminated from the tournament, earning ninth-place money amounting to $1 million.
At the time, Lee entered the final table as the second-shortest stack with 22 big blinds. Wasnock's chip stack increased to 144 million after the hand, while Mizrachi currently holds 93 million chips, securing the second position.
The hand that led to Lee's elimination was not the only pivotal moment of the tournament. Mizrachi described a crucial hand that was so intense he could hardly see the cards, highlighting his focus and strategic mastery in defeating a massive 9,735-player field. This victory marked Mizrachi as the first multiple bracelet winner to take the Main Event since Stu Ungar in 1997 and added to his exceptional 2025 run.
John Wasnock finished second, securing a $6,000,000 prize, despite being called “The Grinder” and securing the title in some reports. However, it was Michael Mizrachi who ultimately secured the title, defying some early reports phrasing.
Leo Margets from Spain made history by becoming the first woman in 30 years to reach the Main Event final table, finishing seventh and securing at least $1,500,000, the highest-ever cash prize for a woman in the Main Event. Margets is generating headlines as she could become the first woman to win the WSOP Main Event.
Other notable finalists included Braxton Dunaway (3rd), Kenny Hallaert (4th), Luka Bojovic (5th), Adam Hendrix (6th), and Jarod Minghini (8th). This final table was notable not only for the high level of competition but also for the historic milestones regarding gender representation and Mizrachi’s exceptional achievement.
In the modern era, Leo Margets is the only woman to make the Main Event final table, breaking a three-decade gap since Barbara Enright was last the only woman to make the final nine in 1995. Enright is the only other woman to have finished in the top 5 of the WSOP Main Event, achieving this feat in 1995.
The biggest pay jumps and the bracelet, along with the $10 million first prize, will be awarded to the 2025 champion at 1.30pm Wednesday. The plan is to play down to four players today, with a pause at 1.30pm Wednesday.
