Bummed Out Kevin Pietersen Misses Chance to Mentor Harry Brook

"Harry Brook displays some technical weaknesses in India, leaving Pietersen disappointed about not collaborating with him"

In a tough turn of events, cricket legend Kevin Pietersen, the mentor for the Delhi Capitals, has voiced his dismay over not getting the chance to work with the promising young talent, Harry Brook, during IPL 2025.

DC had snapped up Brook at the 2025 IPL mega-auction. To everyone's surprise, however, on March 9, 2025, Brook chose to sit out the season. This action also put him at risk of receiving a two-year ban from the IPL as per the league's new regulations. A few weeks later, he was appointed as the England captain for both ODIs and T20Is.

Pietersen: Said What He'd Do with Root and Bairstow, Woulda Done with Brook

Starting this season, DC also brought on board Pietersen as the team mentor. In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, Pietersen confessed to reaching out to Brook after the latter made his decision. "I told him, I was like, 'Dude, I'm gutted that I can't work with you for a few months.'"

He went on to express his belief in Brook's raw talent, "You don't hit one ball over extra cover and the next, same ball, over mid-wicket if you can't play. So he can properly play, but he has technical flaws in the subcontinent - in India, in particular."

Pietersen had dreams of getting Brook to break out of his shell, stating, "I really wanted to work with him, but people make their own choices in life, and you've got to respect that."

Brook's Technical Hindrances on Display

This isn't the first time Pietersen has expressed his disappointment over the same topic. Speaking to The Telegraph in April, he voiced, "We were disappointed that he didn't turn up. But those are his decisions." He added, "A lot of guys from England, South Africa, Australia, have the same issues [with dealing with spin]. There's just a lot of technical things that can change."

Still, he pointed out Brook's weaknesses in his spin-bowling batting, "Watching him play spin on the last tour, he clearly has some faults that can be corrected with a few technical changes."
