Harrison Ford Expresses View on Politics Shifting Towards a Potential Rightward Tilt

In a wide-ranging interview with Variety, published on Wednesday, Harrison Ford shared his thoughts on the current state of American politics and economics.

The iconic actor expressed concern over the widening economic gap between the rich and the poor, stating that it is a major issue that people of all political persuasions should address. Ford lamented the current situation where "the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer," which he considers a significant issue that exacerbates division but could also point to economic commonality that might unify people.

Ford believes that the U.S.'s deep political polarization is the real problem. He views the current political polarization under President Donald Trump's administration as part of a natural pendulum swing in U.S. politics, describing the country's shift to the right as "healthy." However, he emphasized the need for political compromise and a return to the center, stating that the middle is where Americans belong because it represents fairness through compromise.

Despite these concerns, Ford appears accepting of the current political climate as a phase that will eventually swing back. He stressed that in politics "you get what you get" and urged a focus on fighting for what you believe is right.

Ford also criticized Trump’s first term for divisiveness but reflected philosophically on Trump's second term, emphasizing the importance of learning to handle defeat while still sticking to one's values. He highlighted that people have forgotten the lesson of accepting what they get and not getting upset, a lesson taught in kindergarten.

Ford endorsed Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential race. However, he may lean liberal, but he isn't concerned about the country shifting toward conservatism. He believes that due to political disaggregation, finding commonality is becoming difficult. Ford stated that the zero-sum game between the left and the right has hindered America's ability to find solutions through the middle ground.

It is important to note that there is no credible evidence supporting claims that Ford walked off a TV show over these views.

Ford does not claim to have solutions to the economic issues, acknowledging that he is not qualified to provide answers. However, his thoughts on the state of American politics and economics provide a perspective that encourages dialogue and a call for unity.

In the interview, Ford expressed concerns about the economic disparity between rich and poor, stating it as a universal issue that requires attention from people of all political beliefs. He believes that the country's deep political polarization is problematic, advocating for a return to political compromise and fairness. Ford criticizes the divisiveness in politics, echoing the importance of learning to handle defeat while maintaining one's values, as often taught in early education. Despite endorsing Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, he remains open to the country moving toward conservatism, expressing difficulty in finding common ground due to political fragmentation.
