Harris Concedes Swift Mistake Jeopardized Her Presidential Bid

In her new book, "107 Days," Vice President Kamala Harris offers an open and honest account of her 2024 presidential campaign against Donald Trump.

Initially, Harris considered several potential running mates, including Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro. However, she had reservations about Shapiro's ambition and the potential impact on their partnership. Ultimately, Harris chose Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate. But Walz's debate performance against JD Vance left Harris frustrated.

Harris' first choice for a running mate was Pete Buttigieg, the current transportation secretary. She thought it was "too big of a risk" to pick Buttigieg due to his being gay and a Black woman as president. Despite this, Harris believed that West, her brother-in-law, put together a solid plan for her to take over as president in case something happened to Joe Biden, known as the "Red File."

The book also reveals Harris's interactions with Trump during the campaign. After a second assassination attempt against her, Harris had a conversation with Trump where he flattered her and mentioned that his daughter Ivanka is a fan of hers. Harris was left marveling at Trump's ability to turn on the charm, but she still thought he was a con man.

Harris acknowledges that Joe Biden had physical and verbal stumbles during the campaign due to his age of 81. She insists she had no concerns about Biden's ability to serve as president, but she believes that Biden's team should have realized that any campaign was a bridge too far. After a debate where Biden wasn't performing well, Harris noticed this and felt that the inner circle should have been more aware of the situation.

The title of the book refers to the length of the hyperspeed campaign Harris launched after Joe Biden dropped out. Harris admits a damaging appearance on "The View" talk show where she blanked on prepared talking points and said she couldn't think of anything she would have done differently than Joe Biden during the previous four years.

Despite Harris' efforts, she lost the 2024 presidential election to Donald Trump. In the book, she reflects on the campaign, offering a candid and open account of her experience. There is only one reference to California Gov. Gavin Newsom in the book, where he did not return Harris' call after Joe Biden ended his reelection campaign.

Overall, "107 Days" provides a fascinating insight into Harris' presidential campaign and offers a unique perspective on the 2024 election.
