Winning by a Whisker: "Shy" Reform Voters in Labour Strongholds Change the Political Landscape

In a shocking turn of events, the Reform UK party narrowly edged out Labour in the Runcorn by-election by a mere six votes. Baroness Harman, a Labour peer and former minister, attributes this close outcome to the elusive presence of "shy" Reform voters residing in Labour heartlands.

During an enlightening discussion with Beth Rigby on the electrifying Electoral Dysfunction podcast, Baroness Harman revealed her own feelings of frustration. She expressed her regret at missing the decisive six votes if the team had known just how close the race was.

The Runcorn and Helsby seat was a new creation in 2024, claiming victory for Reform UK's Sarah Pochin over Labour candidate Karen Shore by a slight margin. This outcome overturned a 34.8% majority gained by former Labour MP Mike Amesbury last year before he stepped down following an unfortunate altercation with a constituent on a night out.

The local elections, running concurrently, marked the Conservatives' loss of control over all 18 councils they were contesting. Reform snatched eight of those councils, sparking political jitters across the spectrum. Additionally, Reform secured two out of the six mayoral contests, claiming their first two mayoral victories.

Baroness Harman emphasized that Labour now has an essential task: focusing on delivering improvements to the health service. The party has just initiated the rollout of minimum wage increases and breakfast clubs, which are likely to bolster Labour's position.

Yet, she also called on the government to present a convincing narrative beyond the familiar refrains of 'bear with us' while it sets things right. "It appears that Farage lacks any substantial delivery so far, whereas the government is substantially tackling its responsibilities, even though it doesn't have a big enough story to make the connection," she stated.

In her view, the "Blue Labour" faction within the Labour Party, representing a socially conservative wing of the party, will be bolstered by recent events. Even though she does not expect significant changes to policies like the winter fuel payment, she anticipates increased pressure on Labour to adopt a tougher stance on issues like immigration.

Despite the unexpected outcomes in the by-election and local elections, Baroness Harman believes that these results will not lead to internal strife or unraveling within the Labour Party.
