Title: Merz's Alliance with EU Hardliners: Tougher Migration Policies on the Horizon, Yet Challenges Persist

Friedrich Merz, Germany's new Chancellor, has aligned himself with a formidable group of EU hardliners on the thorny issue of migration. With Austria's Chancellor Christian Stocker leading the charge, a total of 21 out of 27 EU member states have joined this coalition—a first for Germany under Merz’s leadership. Known as the "EU immigration hawks," this group is dead set on enforcing a more robust EU migration policy.

Emboldened by this alliance, Merz recently held talks with Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Berlin, deeming Denmark a beacon for migration policy reform. Denmark, set to take over the EU Council presidency on July 1, is no stranger to tough immigration measures, with a reputation built on speedy asylum decisions, repatriation centers, and swift deportations.

The EU Commission has already green-lit the establishment of repatriation centers for rejected asylum seekers in third countries, paving the way for the sweeping changes that the immigration hawks envision. However, Merz's fervent push for conducting the same in Germany faces significant domestic legal hurdles. A recent court ruling declared that the policy of turning away asylum seekers at the border to be unlawful, deal a significant blow to Merz’s much-publicized "effective entry ban."

While it remains to be seen how these challenges will unfold, Merz's clear alignment with EU hardliners indicates a concerted effort to modernize the EU's migration policy. Time will tell if this alliance can withstand the legal and political hurdles that lie ahead.
