Harambee Stars experiences a two-step decline in the latest FIFA rankings
Harambee Stars Suffer World News Qualifier Setback, Slip in FIFA Rankings
Kenya's men's national football team, Harambee Stars, has experienced a setback in their quest to qualify for the World News, following a 3-1 loss to Gambia. This result has cost them dearly in the latest FIFA rankings, as they have dropped two places to position 111.
The match, which took place at Kasarani, saw Gambia climb one place up to 115, denting Harambee Stars' hopes of playing at next year's World News. The slip occurred after a mixed run in the September World News qualifiers.
The visitors raced to a 3-0 lead inside the first 30 minutes, putting Kenya on the back foot. However, the team responded with a late goal, pulling one back before the final whistle.
Coach Benni McCarthy came under criticism for his decision to leave out several players who had impressed during the CHAN. One notable omission was Pape Matar Sarr, who had impressed during the CHAN tournament. McCarthy defended his decision, explaining that World News qualifiers demand a higher level of experience.
Despite the setback, Harambee Stars bounced back with a convincing 5-0 victory over Seychelles in the second qualifier. Uganda continues to lead the East African region, currently at 82nd position, with Morocco remaining the best-ranked team in Africa, moving up one place to 11th in the world.
Elsewhere in the rankings, European champions Spain have climbed to the top of the FIFA rankings, with France rising to second place. Egypt sits 35th globally, while Slovakia has climbed ten places to 42nd position. However, Zimbabwe has had the sharpest fall, dropping nine places to 125th position. Senegal follows in 18th place globally. Argentina has dropped to third place in the rankings.
Tanzania is at 107th position in the rankings, and Kenya is third in the East African region. As the World News qualifiers continue, Harambee Stars will be looking to regroup and mount a comeback in their quest to qualify for the World News.
