Hansa Rostock's defensive crisis deepens with Carstens' ankle injury

The German Football Association (DFB) control committee has yet to impose a suspension for the red card Florian Carstens received in the 65th minute of Hansa Rostock's 1:0 away win at SV Wehen Wiesbaden two weekends ago. While the dismissal is widely seen as an overly harsh decision, Rostock remains hopeful of a lenient penalty—no more than a two-match ban. However, whether the suspension will even matter is now another question entirely.

In Saturday's ultimately dominant 5:1 quarterfinal victory in the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state cup against 1. FC Neubrandenburg, Carstens suffered what could be a serious ankle injury. In the final play of the match, an opponent landed awkwardly on the 27-year-old's ankle, making it immediately clear that he would be unable to continue.

No Diagnosis Yet for Carstens

Carstens was taken directly to the hospital for further examination. The severity of the center-back's injury remains unknown. After the game, head coach Daniel Brinkmann declined to speculate during an interview with Hansa-TV, preferring to wait for medical findings: "I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I hope it's nothing serious. But I won't make any diagnosis—I can't assess it, and I'd rather wait to hear what the doctors say," he remarked, though his tone suggested cautious optimism.

Carstens is one of the team's undisputed regulars and key performers. He has started 29 of Hansa's first 30 league matches this season, missing only the 1:0 away win in December against VfB Stuttgart II due to a yellow-card suspension. With the red card in Wiesbaden, he will definitely sit out Saturday's match against Viktoria Köln—but Brinkmann will be hoping that's the extent of his absence.

Yet the worst-case scenario could see Carstens sidelined for the rest of the season. In that event, young defenders Lukas Wallner—and possibly Leon Reichardt—would likely see increased playing time. Neither has moved beyond a squad role so far this season, though Wallner made a strong case for himself in Neubrandenburg, scoring the temporary 2:0.

Pfanne's Return Still Uncertain

Meanwhile, it remains unclear when captain Franz Pfanne, who has been struggling with persistent adductor issues, will be available again. The 31-year-old has not played since mid-February and has made just two brief substitute appearances since the winter break. If Carstens faces a lengthy absence, Pfanne's return would be all the more crucial—though it does not appear imminent.

Regardless of personnel challenges, Hansa Rostock aims to maintain its strong form, having taken 13 points from its last five games. The team will look to maximize results in the upcoming midweek fixtures, with home matches against Köln and SSV Ulm viewed as must-win games, sandwiched around a critical away clash with promotion rival SC Verl.
