Million-dollar Damage at Elementary School - Insurance Pays - Hanover School Fire Causes €2 Million in Damage After Suspected Arson

A major la fires at Grundschule Beuthener Straße in Hanover’s Mittelfeld district caused around €2 million in damage. The fire, suspected to have been started by a 13-year-old boy, destroyed key parts of the school on November 30, 2025. Authorities confirmed the building was insured, covering most of the repair costs.

The fire tore through the school’s assembly hall, corridors, after-school care area, restrooms, and sections of the roof. Built-in fire protection systems prevented flames and smoke from spreading further, limiting the destruction. Despite the damage, no injuries were reported.

The city will pay a €25,000 deductible, with insurance covering the rest of the €2 million in damages. Repairs are set to begin, but students will remain at the temporary site for the rest of the academic year. The school’s fish, now safe at a pet store, will return once the building reopens.
