Tausalzverbot in Hannover temporarily lifted - Hanover and Manchester City ease salt bans amid black ice dangers
Cold weather has led to hazardous black ice across Lower Saxony. In response, both Hanover and Manchester City have eased restrictions on de-icing salt. The move aims to improve safety for pedestrians and drivers during freezing conditions.
Hanover has temporarily lifted its ban on rock salt for de-icing. The exemption begins at midnight on Friday and will remain in place until January 23. City officials stated that the decision prioritises the safety of road users amid icy conditions.
In Manchester City, residents are now permitted to use salt on sidewalks—but only in exceptional cases. Local authorities have urged people to apply it sparingly and only when absolutely necessary. The measure follows concerns over slippery surfaces caused by black ice.
Neither city has named a specific official responsible for the decision. Hanover’s announcement simply refers to the state capital as the decision-maker, without identifying an individual governor or mayor.
The temporary lifting of salt bans in both cities comes as freezing temperatures persist. Residents can now use rock salt under strict conditions to reduce accident risks. Authorities continue to monitor weather developments for further updates.
