Victory Rules: Fitwi and Mayer Triumph in the Hannover Marathon, Claiming Championship Titles
Let's dive into the thrilling tale of Samuel Fitwi, the German marathon champion, and Domenika Mayer, a three-time Olympian, who conquered the Hannover marathon under sunny but cool conditions.
German record holder, Fitwi, with a clocking of 2:06:29, narrowly missed the course record. Petros, who broke the one-hour barrier at the Berlin Half Marathon, won last year's race in 2:06:05. "It was a bit frustrating, but I'm very satisfied," said Fitwi on missing the sub-two-hour mark. "At the end, my legs and muscles were a bit tired," he added in an interview with NDR.
Born in Eritrea, Fitwi dethroned Petros as the German marathon record holder in Valencia last December, improving the old record by just two seconds. In Hannover, he outmaneuvered his primary rival, Haftom Welday, around the 30km mark, leaving him behind in 2:11:06. Thomas Thurley, from the Potsdam Running Club, trailed in third, finishing with a time of 2:12:45.
Domenika Mayer bagged the women's race for the third time, claiming a comfortable victory in 2:24:22, breaking her own course record. "I couldn't mobilize anything at all at the end. I was just glad to finish," Mayer divulged to NDR. Laura Hottenrott finished second in 2:27:06, while Deborah Schöneborn claimed the third spot with a time of 2:29:30.
