Ski Jumping Champion Hannawald Opposes "Alibi Tour" for Female Competitors

Legendary ski jumper Sven Hannawald isn't inclined to chime in about the prospect of a half-Four Hills Tournament in the upcoming events taking place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Oberstdorf before the New Year. As the last German tour winner back in 2002, Hannawald isn't into the half-tour idea; instead, he sees any "women's tour" as the original one taking off in Oberstdorf and concluding in Bischofshofen.

In the absence of an official Four Hills Tournament, female ski jumpers have been yearning for a competitive event – finally, they'll be competing on December 30 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and January 1 in Oberstdorf, as part of the "Two Nights Tour."

Hannawald, a proud Bavarian native, holds a distinctive view on this matter. When speaking to the German Press Agency, he emphasized that he can't split his enthusiasm for ski jumping into halves, and he's not discussing half a tour but rather participating in Garmisch.

His obvious disdain for an alternative tour, often referred to as an "alibi tour," stems from its perceived unimportance compared to the traditional competition process, which begins in Oberstdorf and culminates in Bischofshofen.

What is the Four Hills Tournament?

The Four Hills Tournament, also known as the Vierschanzentournee, is an esteemed ski jumping competition dating back to 1953, usually featuring male jumpers. Yet, it is noteworthy to mention that there isn't a distinct Four Hills Tournament specifically for women. However, women have partaken in their version of the event.

The Silvester Tournament was introduced in 2021, a recognized women's ski jumping contest that includes knockout rounds. The highly coveted title is awarded to the competitor with the most accumulated points from jumps.
