The public prosecutor's office has indicted the 23-year-old Iranian citizen for numerous offenses, including attempted murder. On June 9, he allegedly hurled a hand grenade at a mourning gathering in Altbach. At least 15 individuals were injured, some severely, according to the public prosecutor. The grenade miraculously bounced off a branch, causing it to land and explode 30 meters away from the mourners, sparing them from more significant harm.
The crime is thought to be rooted in a long-standing feud between rival groups in the Stuttgart area. The accused was reportedly connected to a Kurdish group, as per the public prosecutor's assertions. Suspecting numerous members or sympathizers of the opposing group to be present at the funeral, the accused took advantage of the mourning congregation's emotional state to carry out the attack.
To ensure the trial runs smoothly, the proceedings are taking place in the secure chamber of the Higher Regional Court in Stuttgart-Stammheim. The trial, currently scheduled for eleven days, is expected to conclude by mid-March.
