Hamm Appoints Annika Behrens as Coordinator for Municipal Development Policy

Hamm, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, has appointed Annika Behrens as its Coordinator for Municipal Development Policy. The role, funded by Engagement Global gGmbH and supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), aims to enable municipalities to independently plan and implement development measures. Behrens' position is initially limited to two years, with a possible extension of another two.

Behrens will work closely with Hamm's Climate Protection Manager, Tobias Garske, and the Fairtrade-Town steering group. She brings valuable experience from her previous role as a scientific employee at the UNESCO Chair of the Technical University of Dortmund. Her dedication to Fair Trade and Sustainable Procurement will be an asset to the city administration.

Behrens' focus will be on intensifying partnerships with municipalities in the Global South, particularly Mazatlán in Mexico. Her fluency in Spanish, honed during her studies in Southern Spain, will facilitate this collaboration. Around 50 municipalities in Germany have already created similar positions, demonstrating the importance and relevance of Behrens' role in Hamm.

Annika Behrens' appointment as Coordinator for Municipal Development Policy in Hamm marks a significant step in the city's commitment to sustainable development and international cooperation. Her expertise and dedication will drive progress in areas such as education for sustainable development, waste management, Fair Trade, and sustainable procurement. With the support of Engagement Global gGmbH and the BMZ, Behrens is poised to make a substantial impact in her two-year term, with the potential for extension.
