Hamilton Airport flying after return of international flights
Hamilton Airport has marked a major turning point in 2025, welcoming international flights for the first time in years. The airport also saw a surge in domestic travel after Jetstar launched a new daily jet service between Hamilton and Christchurch in December. This move has brought fresh competition to the route, influencing airfares and boosting passenger numbers.
The airport’s transformation began in July 2025 when it reopened to international flights. To handle the change, Hamilton Airport established a new international border facility, meeting New Zealand’s requirements. The return of overseas services signalled growing confidence in Waikato as a key region for travel and business.
Air New Zealand restarted its own jet service on the Hamilton-Christchurch route in September 2025. But the biggest shift came on December 1, when Jetstar introduced its first direct daily jet flights between the two cities. This addition increased capacity on the route by 70%, offering travellers more options.
The airport now expects December 2025 to be its busiest month on record, with around 60% more passengers than the same period in 2024. Jetstar’s entry has also drawn back travellers who had previously avoided flying due to high domestic fares. With more competition, ticket prices have begun to soften, making air travel more accessible.
The expansion of services at Hamilton Airport has reshaped travel in the region. International flights resumed in July, while Jetstar’s December launch added significant capacity to the Christchurch route. As passenger numbers climb, the airport is preparing for a record-breaking month, with lower fares encouraging more people to fly.
