Renovation of Neue Jungfernstieg Street is Complete - Hamburg's New Jungfernstieg: A Pedestrian Paradise After €5.8M Renovation

Hamburg's New Jungfernstieg Street has undergone a transformative renovation, completed after a year-long project at a cost of approximately 5.8 million euros. The street, now five metres wide, boasts a range of improvements aimed at enhancing pedestrian and cyclist safety and comfort.

The revamped street features a 20 mph speed limit to slow down traffic. Pedestrians enjoy wider sidewalks, measuring six metres by the water and three metres by the buildings. Cyclists now share the road with cars, with the bike and pedestrian path separated for safety.

The street offers more outdoor dining areas and greenery, providing additional pedestrian space. Two disabled parking spots and two for electric cars have been added, while about 50 parking spots have been removed. In their place, a multifunctional strip has been created for various uses.

The renovation was symbolically completed by Traffic Senator Anjes Tjarks (Greens), who may or may not have attended a symbolic planting of shrubs to mark the project's end.

New Jungfernstieg Street's renovation has resulted in a more pedestrian and cyclist-friendly space, with improved safety features and increased greenery. The project's completion marks a significant step in Hamburg's ongoing efforts to promote sustainable urban mobility.
