Horst Hrubesch, a man who leapfrogged with joy for Hamburger SV's double Bundesliga promotion, has now hung up his boots - the last of the old-school legends waves goodbye to the Hanseatics, perhaps forever.

As the former "header monster" with an insatiable football wisdom and a genial folklore, Hrubesch is leaving the slick world of professional football, and at 74, he might be stepping off the big football stage for good.

Hamburger SV's people's champ, a champion of women's football and youth, an exceptional football strategist, and a beloved team player, is riding off into the sunset. "It's high time for fresh blood to take charge," Hrubesch said, unwavering with his football smarts: "I'll always keep HSV in my heart, and I'm confident in passing the baton to the upcoming troop."

Being the coach who delivered the U21 European Championship title in 2009 and the Olympic silver in 2016, and the bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics with the women's team, Hrubesch leaves his mark on HSV, where he also had a stint as interim coach. Club President Stefan Kuntz begrudgingly accepted the decision, as stated by HSV.

Football, Promotion, and Exceptional Chapter Celebrating the Unique Hero of Hamburg SV

"Anyone who knows Horst will never willingly let him go," said the 1996 European champion: "But once Horst takes a firm stand, it's nearly impossible to alter his mind. Ultimately, we are grateful to him and his family for letting Hamburg SV keep him in a responsible role for so long."

Five years ago, Hrubesch left the German Football Association (DFB) for HSV - the team he had won the European Cup of Champions with in 1983. Now, with his tenure as the director of youth at the Uwe-Seeler-Allee coming to an end, Hrubesch is handing over control of the youth performance center and women's football to Christoph Rohmer, Loic Favé, Julia Brinkschröder, Saskia Breuer, and other colleagues. He had already involved this team in strategic decisions.

Hrubesch will now be devoting more time to fly fishing, one of his favorite pastimes mentioned in his 1980 book "Dorschangeln vom Boot und an den Küsten." The Hamburgers will miss their "Mister HSV" on the pitch. And not just them.
