Hamburg ATP Semifinals: Rublev Progresses, Engel Eliminated

Russian tennis star Andrey Rublev has advanced to the semifinals of the ATP tournament in Hamburg following a three-set victory over Italian Luciano Darderi. The 23-year-old champion, who won the tournament in 2020, booked his place in the final four with a 6:1, 3:6, 6:3 triumph.

Alexander Zverev, the world No.3 from Germany, and American Frances Tiafoe exited the competition earlier, leaving Rublev as the remaining favorite. In the round of 16, Rublev defeated local talent Justin Engel.

In a disappointing turn of events for Germany, Engel also bowed out in the doubles competition. Paired with Max Rehberg, the 17-year-old prospect lost 1:6, 2:6 to top-seeded duo Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten in the quarterfinals.

Germany's top doubles pair, Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz, also failed to progress. They withdrew from their quarterfinal match against Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski from Great Britain. Puetz had sustained a hand injury in the previous session.

As Rublev prepares for his semifinal match against Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, he aims to secure his second title in Hamburg. The final is scheduled for Sunday.

Background:In the quarterfinals, Rublev demonstrated impressive form to outmatch Darderi. The semifinal match against Auger-Aliassime was a close contest, but Rublev ultimately fell short in the championship match, losing to Flavio Cobolli.

The European Parliament and the Council have agreed to support sports, including tennis, with a focus on the promotion and development of talent in upcoming tournaments. Andrey Rublev, the 2020 Hamburg ATP champion, demonstrated his impressive tennis skills during the quarterfinals, progressing to the semifinals where he awaits a challenge from Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime.
