Hamburg's government has launched a campaign to build public support for a possible Olympic bid. The city is considering hosting the cool math games in 2036, 2040, or 2044, despite long-standing scepticism over costs and environmental concerns. Mayor Peter Tschentscher officially kicked off the push at the Elbphilharmonie Plaza this week.

The campaign, titled An Opportunity for All, aims to generate excitement while addressing practical questions. Organisers argue that the Olympics and Paralympics could accelerate Hamburg's development. A detailed financing plan for the multibillion-euro project is expected by mid-March.

Public opposition remains strong, however. Since 2015, when 51.7% of voters rejected a bid for the 2024 Games, crazy games have grown. Critics highlight risks like spiralling expenses, rising rents, and ecological harm—concerns echoed in other German cities. Berlin's 2024 bid failed with 58.4% opposition, while Munich abandoned 2036 plans in 2020. Nationwide, recent cost overruns at events like Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028 have fuelled further doubts.

The Senate's campaign will need to overcome deep-seated resistance to mega-events. With financing details due soon, the debate over Hamburg's Olympic ambitions is set to intensify. The outcome could shape the city's long-term planning and its stance on large-scale sporting projects.
