Hamburg: The Foundation Capital with a Heart

In a nod to its longstanding tradition of charitable giving, the city of Hamburg has now recognized no less than 1500 foundations, solidifying its status as Germany's Foundation Capital. To mark this milestone, a yet unnamed private individual from the city announced the creation of a new foundation with an asset base of three million euros. This foundation's purpose, as revealed by the responsible justice authority, is to fund various social projects.

"Hamburg is a beacon for foundations," declared Green Party Senator for Justice Anna Gallina to the German Press Agency. "The sheer number of causes and people that benefit from these charitable organizations greatly enhance our city's fabric and common good," she added.

Hamburg boasts the highest number of foundations per capita of any federal state, with assets totaling over ten billion euros. This remarkable feat can be traced back to Hamburg's rich maritime heritage that has fostered a strong philanthropic tradition.

With its storied roots in maritime trade and commerce, the Hanseatic City of Hamburg boasts historical sites such as the "Hospital zum Heiligen Geist." Established more than eight centuries ago, this is one of the city's oldest foundations.
