Hamburg Sees a Surge in Water and Land Rescues by DLRG Volunteers
Life-Saving operation by DLRG: 216 individuals rescued in Hamburg - Hamburg Emergency Rescue Service (DLRG) rescues 216 individuals in Hamburg's waters.
Let's dive into the thrilling world of lifesaving in Hamburg, shall we? Last year, our heroic volunteer lifeguards, a.k.a. the DLRG (Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft e.V.), were literally making waves, rescuing a staggering 216 individuals from life-threatening situations — a significant leap from the 101 deployments in 2023. But where did most of these rescues occur, you ask? Believe it or not, more than half of the thrilling events unfolded far from the waves, on the sunny beaches and even the streets of our gorgeous city.
The magic behind this increase can be traced back to the DLRG district of Upper Elbe, a powerhouse of the general rescue service. Boasting two ambulances crewed entirely by volunteers and a mobile emergency doctor's vehicle, this district ensures that our lifesavers are always on call, ready to spring into action when needed throughout the year. As a result, they lend a helping hand in all sorts of emergencies, not just water-related ones!
"The surge in DLRG teams intervening outside the water is quite evident," a DLRG spokesperson shared with the German Press Agency, from the heart of Hamburg.
Now, you might be wondering, 'But what about the poor souls who drowned?' I'm sorry to say, the statistics show that 14 lives were tragically lost in our rivers and lakes in 2024. The Elbe, infamous for its ever-shifting currents and destructive suction created by massive sea vessels, claimed the most victims. The dedicated force of 366 lifeguards remained vigilant along the waterways, offering 45,220 hours of heroic water rescue service last year to ensure the safety of our fellow citizens. In doing so, they aided 653 people and managed to ward off disaster on countless occasions.
But it's not all sunshine and lifesaving, unfortunately. In 2024, the grim statistics reveal that 14 lives were lost despite our lifesavers' valiant efforts. These grim numbers shed light on the unpredictable nature of our city's waterways.
Now, here's something that might stoke your curiosity. When we delve deeper into the history of the DLRG, we find that they celebrated a major milestone in 2025 — their 100th anniversary! This momentous occasion was marked by an extravagant parade of their vessels, which graced the Hamburg Port Anniversary event. While this anniversary celebration doesn't necessarily provide context for the increase in rescues, it underlines the importance of the DLRG's role in water rescue and disaster response operations.
So, there you have it! The waterways of Hamburg are well-guarded by the brave souls of the DLRG. Here's hoping next summer brings even more dazzling rescue tales to keep us on the edge of our seats!
