Thousands of passengers sue airlines in Hamburg - Hamburg court overwhelmed by 8,500 flight compensation lawsuits in 2025
Hamburg-Mitte District Court faced a surge in flight-related lawsuits last year. Over 8,500 cases were filed in 2025, mostly due to cancellations, delays, and lost luggage. These disputes made up more than half of all civil lawsuits handled by the court.
Passengers primarily sought compensation for disrupted travel plans. Most claims involved delayed or cancelled flights, though exact figures for baggage-related cases remain unclear. While the number of lawsuits dropped slightly from 2024—when over 9,300 were recorded—the volume stayed high.
Nationwide, around 121,000 claims were submitted in 2025, about 10,000 fewer than the previous year. The rise in court cases has been linked to online platforms that make it easier for passengers to pursue compensation. Courts are now exploring artificial intelligence to manage the workload, though these systems are still being tested.
The trend shows a steady flow of flight-related disputes, despite a small decline in numbers. With AI tools under development, courts may soon handle these cases more efficiently. For now, passengers continue to rely on legal action to resolve travel issues.
