Hamburg Welcomes 1.4 Million Cruise Guests in a Year - Hamburg breaks records as Germany's top cruise port in 2022

Hamburg has solidified its position as Germany's busiest cruise port after welcoming 1.4 million passengers in 2022. The city saw a notable rise in visitor numbers, with more travellers choosing to extend their stay before or after their voyage.

Last year, Hamburg handled 295 ship calls, hosting 46 different cruise vessels. Three of these visits marked maiden voyages, adding to the port's growing activity. The city expects even higher traffic in 2023, with 331 scheduled ship calls—including eight first-time visits and 47 river cruise stops.

More passengers are now spending time in Hamburg beyond their cruise. In 2022, 38% stayed at least one night, compared to just 20% in 2016. On average, each visitor spent €133.59 during their time in the city, with over 70% dining out, visiting cultural sites, or shopping. The 2022 figures also showed a 100,000-passenger increase from the previous year, reinforcing Hamburg's role as a key European cruise hub.

The rise in overnight stays and spending highlights Hamburg's growing appeal as a cruise destination. With even more ship calls planned for 2023, the city is set to remain a major player in the industry. The increase in visitor numbers and economic impact reflects its expanding role in European cruise travel.
