Hamburg faces weekend traffic chaos - here's what you need to know - Hamburg braces for weekend travel chaos amid strike and road closures
Hamburg faces major travel disruptions this weekend as transport workers stage a 24-hour strike and key roads close for construction. The warning strike by Hamburger Hochbahn and Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein will halt subway and bus services from Saturday 3 a.m. to Sunday 3 a.m. Meanwhile, the A7 motorway will shut completely between Stellingen and Heimfeld from Friday evening until Monday morning.
The strike begins at 3 a.m. on Saturday and lasts until the same time on Sunday. All subway and bus routes operated by Hochbahn and VHH will stop running during this period. S-Bahn trains, ferries, and regional rail services remain unaffected.
Road closures add to the chaos. The A7 motorway will be fully closed from 10 p.m. on Friday until 5 a.m. on Monday. This shutdown also affects the Elbe Tunnel, cutting off a major route under the river. Near the main train station, the Berlinertordamm Bridge and Bürgerweide are already blocked due to demolition work. With public transport limited and roads shut, demand for alternatives is surging. Taxi firms like Hansataxi expect up to four times the usual bookings. Ride-sharing service Miles anticipates higher demand but cannot add extra vehicles. Cyclists may find relief, as sunny and dry weather is forecast for the weekend.
The combined disruptions will make travel difficult across Hamburg. Commuters and visitors must plan ahead, relying on unaffected rail services, taxis, or bikes. The strike and roadworks coincide with ongoing demolition near the main station, leaving few easy options for getting around.
