State Agency: Still Enough Road Salt After Winter Storm - Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein brace for life-threatening ice storm
A severe ice warning has been issued for Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. The German Weather Service (DWD) alerted residents to freezing rain and black ice from 1:00 PM, creating dangerous travel conditions. Authorities have urged people to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary journeys.
The DWD warned of freezing rain, snow, and slippery roads across the region. Temperatures are expected to range between -1°C and +4°C, with stormy gusts possible near the North Sea. Fog is also set to thicken in coastal areas, reducing visibility further.
The ice warning remains active until midnight. Black ice, known locally as glatteis, poses a serious risk to life and limb. All transport routes may face disruptions or closures, including roads, rail, and public services. Despite the hazardous weather, Schleswig-Holstein’s road maintenance agency has confirmed sufficient gritting salt supplies. Additional stock is on the way to ensure federal, state, and district roads stay treatable. The agency’s service agreements cover multiple counties, keeping key routes as safe as possible.
Residents have been advised to limit outdoor activities and avoid travel where possible. The combination of freezing rain, black ice, and strong winds increases the danger of accidents. Road crews remain on standby, but conditions are likely to stay treacherous until the warning lifts.
