Hamas Suffers Another Strike by Israel; Rumors Swirl About Abu Ubaida's Demise

U.S. and Hamas in Advanced Talks for Gaza Truce and Humanitarian Relief

In an effort to bring an end to the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, which has been ongoing for nearly twenty months, Hamas has been engaged in direct and advanced talks with the U.S. administration, a senior Hamas official confirmed on Sunday. Reportedly, these negotiations have been underway for several days.

The discussions aim to address the humanitarian situation in the besieged region and seize the opportunity for a lasting peace. According to the official, who spoke to Al Jazeera, the goal is to resolve the crisis and secure much-needed aid for the people of Gaza.

Similarly, a senior Palestinian source shared with Reuters that the intention of the talks with the United States is to put an end to the fighting in Gaza and facilitate humanitarian aid delivery.

Sources close to U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East, Steven Weitekamp, reported that he is working closely with Israel, Egypt, and Qatar, acting as intermediaries with Hamas, to discuss a potential prisoner swap and explore broader peace agreements. Weitekamp has also expressed expectations for a breakthrough before or during President Donald Trump's impending visit to the region in mid-May.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a high-level security conference with defense officials and senior ministers on Sunday night to evaluate options for initiating full-scale military operations in Gaza or pursuing a prisoner exchange, given the escalating diplomatic activity.

Meanwhile, the U.S. authorities have been reportedly increasing pressure on the Israeli government to reach a deal with Hamas. The Biden administration views a truce as a strategic priority and has warned Israel that any further delay may result in diplomatic isolation, according to sources familiar with the situation who spoke to Haaretz.

Envoy Weitekamp is said to have cautioned that any further military action could put the hostages' lives at greater risk during a recent discussion with the relatives of Israeli prisoners. He emphasized that continued conflict without a deal would hold Israel accountable.

According to sources who spoke to Haaretz, Weitekamp has intentionally leaked his comments to the Israeli government, signaling Washington's growing frustration.

While it remains to be seen whether these negotiations will yield a lasting peace, optimism is rising, and both parties appear to be working towards a solution that prioritizes the humanitarian needs of the people in Gaza.

The proposed deal under negotiation includes a 60-day ceasefire, with conditions that Israel would release 10 living hostages and the remains of 18 more people held by Hamas. Additionally, Israel would be required to release over 1,100 Palestinian prisoners, including individuals convicted of fatal attacks, and Israel would withdraw its forces to positions held during the previous truce. During the proposed truce, Israel would allow hundreds of aid trucks into Gaza daily to alleviate hunger caused by its blockade. Hamas has emphasized the need for humanitarian guarantees as part of any ceasefire agreement to ensure Israel does not disrupt aid efforts during the truce.
