Hamas reports that Netanyahu refuses to accept a comprehensive truce, instead preferring to divide the ceasefire matters.
Things aren't looking good between Hamas and Israel right now. Hamas said on Friday they've got this refreshing five-year truce idea for Israel, all set, and ready to roll. Unfortunately, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ain't having it, according to Anadolu's report.
Abdel Rahman Shadid, a senior official in Hamas, shared the gritty details of their proposal. It includes everything from a permanent end to aggression, withdrawal of occupation forces from Gaza, easing the siege, allowing aid to flow, and even rebuilding the region. Intriguingly, they're willing to give up all Israeli prisoners in Gaza in exchange for a predetermined number of their own detainees. What's more, there's a five-year peace guarantee involved too!
But, you ask, what did Israel have to say about this seemingly great deal? Netanyahu's government labelled it as extremist, refusing to budge on the issue, and candidly insisting on breaking down the issues instead. Worse still, they're not even willing to stop the war, even if it means prolonging the misery of the Israeli captives in Gaza.
Shadid, however, assures that Hamas is taking a thoughtful, responsible approach to these talks. They've been playing it cool with the mediators, ready to consider anything that leads to a lasting peace. But you can bet your bottom dollar that they ain't pleased with the US and other countries backing Tel Aviv for the horrific stuff that's been happening in Gaza, which includes massacres, genocide, and starvation tactics.
So, how's it going? Apparently, 59 captives are still hanging out in Gaza, with 24 of them believed to be alive. Meanwhile, more than 9,500 Palestinians are sitting lengthy sentences in Israel, subjected to harsh conditions, allegedly including torture, starvation, and medical neglect, as per Palestinian and Israeli rights organizations.
Tragically, more than 52,400 Palestinians have lost their lives in Gaza since October 2023, most of them being women and children. The International Criminal Court slammed the brakes on Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in November, issuing arrest warrants for both due to war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also has a genocide case to answer at the International Court of Justice for their aggression in Gaza. Ouch!
