In the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the role of Hamas, a Palestinian political and militant organisation, has been a significant factor, particularly in the Gaza Strip.

Israel's government, on one hand, claims historical and religious ties to the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and has been against the two-state solution, which involves the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel. On the other hand, Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip, has a different perspective.

Hamas does not recognise Israel's right to exist, but in a 2017 charter, it accepted the establishment of a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, which include the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem. However, Hamas also claims sovereignty over all of historic Palestine, including present-day Israel.

Hamas currently maintains that it will not disarm unless a fully sovereign Palestinian state is established. This stance directly rejects demands for disarmament as a precondition for talks or ceasefires, tying its military capabilities to the political goal of Palestinian statehood.

The refusal to disarm before statehood underlines ongoing tensions and the complexity of peace negotiations involving Gaza. Hamas continues to assert its role as a resistance movement fighting for Palestinian sovereignty, using this position to justify retaining arms.

Recent statements from Hamas do not indicate a shift towards unconditional acceptance of a two-state solution or disarmament independent of political outcomes. Instead, its messaging reinforces demands for full Palestinian sovereignty as a prerequisite for changing its military status.

This standoff highlights the intricacies of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the challenges in achieving a peaceful resolution. The future of the Gaza Strip and the broader region remains a complex and contentious issue, with both sides holding firm to their positions.
