A captured Israeli man lies lifelessly on the ground, another makes a desperate plea for peace in a chilling video released by Hamas. As the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, maintains there are 21 hostages still alive, the Islamic organization puts a foot on the gas, pressuring Netanyahu's power-hungry government.

In a heart-wrenching nearly three-minute clip published by Hamas's militant wing, Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, two Israeli hostages are identified as 36-year-old Elkana Bohbot and 24-year-old Josef-Haim Ohana. These two men were kidnapped by Islamic terrorists during the Novas music festival in Gaza on October 7, 2023. The video made its rounds after it was leaked by the Hostage Family Forum. The exact timing of the filming remains a mystery.

The video captures one of the men, seemingly Bohbot, lying helpless under a blanket. The second man, Ohana, sits cross-legged and speaks Hebrew directly into the camera. With tears in his eyes, he shares the pitiful condition of his companion and demands the Israeli government to bring an end to the Gaza war and secure freedom for the remaining hostages.

Thousands of Israelis took to the streets of Tel Aviv again that evening, marching for the release of the hostages and calling for peace in the Gaza Strip. Banners and placards echoed their demands. The Israeli government accuses Hamas of misusing the hostages for propaganda purposes, using them to manipulate international sentiment and fuel conflict.

Wadephul Sets Foot in Israel

In the past, Hamas and its associates had killed nearly 1200 people and captured 251 hostages during their large-scale attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Fifty-eight hostages remain in the clutches of Islamists, with 34 presumed to be deceased.

On Wednesday, Netanyahu declared with confidence that 21 hostages were still alive. "There are three more," he added, "whose fate remains uncertain," he said in an online address.

Germany supposes there are just a handful of individuals with German ties still residing in the Gaza Strip as hostages. On Sunday, Germany's new foreign minister, Johann Wadephul, is scheduled to meet his Israeli counterpart, Gideon Saar, and Prime Minister Netanyahu during a visit to Israel. Wadephul also plans to tour the Holocaust remembrance site, Yad Vashem.
