Gaza Conflict: Sinwar's Unyielding Resistance Against Israel
Two months into the Israeli ground operations in Gaza, the region's Hamas chief, Jihia al-Sinwar, remains optimistic about their chances of victory. In a letter to Hamas politburo chairman Ismail Hanija and other key figures, Sinwar declared that the militant organization's armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, was putting up a ferocious and unprecedented battle against the Israeli occupation forces .
Sinwar's Fierce Claims
Sinwar boasted of inflicting heavy casualties on the Israeli military. He asserted that over 5,000 soldiers had been attacked, with a third of them killed, another third seriously injured, and yet another third permanently disabled. These figures sharply contrast the Israeli army's acknowledged loss of 150 soldiers in Gaza.
Sinwar further claimed that 750 Israeli military vehicles had been destroyed in the course of the battle. Once again, these numbers appear to be exaggerated, as the Israeli military remains silent on the matter.
The Unyielding Leader
Sinwar's recent verbal aggression may be a response to rumors of an Egyptian proposal aimed at ending the Gaza conflict. Hanija, considered the international face of Hamas and based in Qatar, recently visited Egypt to participate in talks.
Sinwar, much like his predecessor Yahya Sinwar, has adamantly opposed any compromise or submission to Israel's conditions . His leadership style and strategic decisions have been shaped by a desire to preserve Hamas's military strength and to perpetuate the conflict until a victory can be attained.
The Wider Impact of Gaza War
The Gaza Strip has suffered profound damage due to the Israeli offensive. According to the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health, over 20,400 people have been killed, with around four out of five of the 2.2 million inhabitants displaced from their homes. The United Nations paints a bleak picture of Gaza, rife with destruction, despair, hunger, and suffering.
Israel claims to have killed around 8,000 Hamas militants, a number that remains unverified. The ongoing conflict has resulted in several consequences, including the damage to the Hamas office in Tel Aviv, the stalling of infrastructure projects due to violence, and the severe shortage of basic necessities in Gaza.

The current Hamas leader, Jihia al-Sinwar, has been historically uncompromising in his stand against Israel. Unlike his predecessor, Yahya Sinwar, who sought to reform Hamas's approach, Jihia Sinwar has remained steadfast in his calls for military confrontation as the only means to free Palestine .
During the 2023 Israel–Hamas war, Sinwar refused to make any significant concessions, even when faced with immense international pressure and high civilian casualties in Gaza. His strategy was that a higher level of suffering and loss of life in Gaza would result in increased pressure on Israel, thereby improving Hamas's negotiating position .
Sinwar's unyielding attitude and aggressive tactics continue to shape Hamas's decision-making and strategy in the Gaza conflict, making peace negotiations a distant possibility.
