The brutal demise of Hamas military powerhouse, Mohammed al-Sinwar, has been verified by the Israeli military. Remnants of al-Sinwar were found in a covert tunnel hidden beneath the European Hospital in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza, as per an official declaration. The catastrophic incident occurred on May 13th, when al-Sinwar and the commander of the Rafah Brigade, Mohammed Sabaneh, are said to have perished in an attack[1][3]. They were allegedly taking refuge in an underground command center owned by Islamic Hamas.

Evidence pointing to the two fallen militants was discovered within the tunnel, yet further details regarding the findings were not disclosed by the army statement[1]. The announcement also mentioned the discovery of additional bodies during the operation, with investigations ongoing to establish their identities.

Proximity to the clinic

A select few journalists, including a photographer from the German Press Agency, were given a tour of the hidden tunnel today. The undercover infrastructure was described as being well subterranean, positioned very near to the clinic. The tunnel had several rooms filled with blankets, which presumably served as sleeping quarters, and the pungent scent of decay emanated, accompanied by worms visible on the floor[2]. No technical gear could be spotted.

The Palestine-held territory's political militant group, Hamas, is repeatedly accused of abusing medical facilities for military purposes, charges they steadfastly deny. Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, also acknowledged al-Sinwar's death in parliament, but Hamas is yet to confirm the news[3].

Al-Sinwar was the brother of the former Hamas leader, Jihia al-Sinwar, who was also claimed by Israeli forces. Following the death of Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif, al-Sinwar ascended to become the head honcho of Hamas's armed militia, the Kassam Brigades, in 2025[1].
