Hamas declines ceasefire proposal; extremist Israeli politicians advocate for intensifying conflict in Gaza

In a bold move, Hamas has turned down a ceasefire offer from Israel, pushing instead for a more extensive deal to put an end to the ongoing war. A senior Hamas official bluntly stated, "The offer is rejected in full and in detail."

Far-right Israeli politicians, eager for a fight, have been urging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to escalate military actions in Gaza. They demand "complete victory" and accuse Hamas of drawing red lines with their conditions for disarmament.

The Israeli ceasefire plan included a temporary truce during which both sides would negotiate a permanent peace. The proposed deal promised the release of American-Israeli hostage Edan Alexander on the first day of the truce as a goodwill gesture. In exchange, Hamas would relinquish 9 Israeli captives in two stages while freeing 1,100 Palestinian detainees held without charge since October 7, 2023.

However, Hamas desires more than just a temporary truce. They want a comprehensive package that encompasses the release of all living Israeli hostages, a definitive end to hostilities, the complete removal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the launch of reconstruction efforts in Gaza.

Hamas' spokesperson, Khalil Al-Hayya, emphasized in a televised statement that their resistance and weaponry are justified because of the presence of the Israeli occupation. Negotiations for a comprehensive agreement to release all remaining hostages, an agreed-upon number of Palestinian prisoners, the start of Gaza's reconstruction, and an end to the blockade are immediately ready, according to Al-Hayya.

Hamas negotiator Khalil al-Hayya, a senior member of the Palestinian militant organization, holds talks in Istanbul, Turkey, regarding a truce and hostage swap agreement on April 24, 2024.

The far-right Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has advocated for continued bombardment of Gaza, claiming, "The state of Israel shall not surrender to Hamas and won't end the war without the complete victory and fulfillment of all its objectives, including eliminating Hamas and returning all the hostages." National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir echoed Smotrich, demanding a tougher stance, "No deal, no ceasefire, and no aid - only the continuation of fighting until the surrender of the Nazis from Gaza. Activate all force and might until Hamas begs on its knees."

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has worsened dramatically due to the interruption of humanitarian aid and supplies by Israel. This blockade has displaced over 500,000 Palestinians and according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the bombings in Gaza have resulted in nearly 1,700 Palestinian deaths since March 18.

UN officials have warned of a potential humanitarian catastrophe, as lifesaving supplies are quickly approaching total depletion due to the block on aid. Ongoing violence in Gaza has left essential services on the brink of collapse, and mental health needs are spiraling out of control. Israel, as the occupying power, faces criticism for failing to adhere to its obligations under international law to ensure access to food, medical care, and public health services for the over 2 million Palestinians trapped in the besieged enclave.
