Hamas Declares Submission of Counterproposal for Gaza Ceasefire; Israel Threatens Total Destruction

GAZA CITY— Following a proposal from US President Donald Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, Hamas has shared its response with mediators, detailing a ceasefire agreement that includes the release of hostages on both sides.

In a statement on May 31, the Palestinian group specified that they would release 10 living hostages and 18 bodies in exchange for Israel's release of an undisclosed number of Palestinian prisoners. As of press time, Israel's Prime Minister's office has yet to respond to a request for comment regarding this possible deal.

On May 30, Israel stated that Hamas must accept the hostage deal or face annihilation, as President Donald Trump announced that a ceasefire agreement was "very close." This comes as the United Nations warned that Gaza's entire population is at risk of famine due to dire conditions on the ground.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz streamlined the choice to Hamas, stating they must agree to a ceasefire proposal presented by Mr. Witkoff or face destruction. Hamas previously stated that the deal failed to meet their demands.

This proposed ceasefire aims to put an end to nearly 20 months of war in Gaza; however, negotiations have so far failed to achieve a breakthrough, with Israel resuming operations in March following a short-lived truce.

In the United States, President Trump stated "they're very close to an agreement on Gaza," adding that updates would be shared throughout the day or possibly the following day. Despite minimal aid deliveries after the partial lifting by Israel of a more than two-month blockade, food shortages persist in Gaza, earning it the title of "the hungriest place on earth" as per a UN spokesperson.

Separately, the UN condemned the "looting of large quantities of medical equipment" and other supplies intended for malnourished children from one of its Gaza warehouses by armed individuals. The looting was reported to have been occurring over the past few weeks, with aid groups stating that the desperation for food and medicine among Gazans is causing security to deteriorate.

Aside from these ongoing conflicts, tensions remain high in the occupied West Bank due to Israel's continued expansion of settlements despite calls for a two-state solution from international leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron. Israel announced the creation of 22 new settlements in the Palestinian territory this week, considered illegal under international law and seen as a major obstacle to achieving lasting peace in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Despite these challenges, negotiations for a ceasefire continue, with Hamas announcing its readiness to begin a new round of indirect negotiations to resolve outstanding issues. The US, mediated by Steve Witkoff, has proposed a framework for a 60-day ceasefire, with the potential for hostage and prisoner exchanges, but Hamas submitted amendments to the proposal which the US deemed "totally unacceptable." Negotiations are ongoing, with mediators urging Hamas to soften its stance and accept the US-proposed framework as the basis for further discussions.

  1. The ongoing ceasefire negotiations in Gaza, impacted by war-and-conflicts, politics, and crime-and-justice, are also intertwined with general news such as the UN's warnings about Gaza's risk of famine and the looting of humanitarian aid supplies.
  2. Amidst the war-and-conflicts in Gaza, the ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire, including potential hostage and prisoner exchanges, are complicated by the obstacles presented by Israel's continued expansion of settlements in the occupied West Bank, a source of tension and general-news interest.
