The latest ceasefire proposal for the Gaza Strip, controlled by the Islamic Palestinian organisation Hamas, has been accepted by the group and other involved parties. This new offer, which was reportedly received by Hamas negotiators on Monday, aims for a 60-day temporary suspension of military operations.

According to the proposal, Hamas would release half of the living Israeli hostages in two phases. This ceasefire proposal, brokered by Egypt and Qatar, also includes plans for a longer-lasting ceasefire and potentially the establishment of a transitional authority in Gaza.

Key details of the proposal include:

  1. The initial stage of the ceasefire is a six-week period aimed at releasing all Israeli captives (civilian and military, alive or deceased) in return for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
  2. The broader goals of the proposal include returning sustainable calm, ending the Israeli occupation and siege of Gaza, and implementing a reconstruction process over three to five years.
  3. The ceasefire and prisoner exchanges have seen multiple rounds, with Hamas agreeing on 5 May 2024 to the initial proposal that was mediated by the US, Egypt, and Qatar, and subsequently presented by US President Biden.
  4. The proposal received UN Security Council support via Resolution 2735 on 10 June 2024.
  5. Political challenges arose with Israeli leadership under Benjamin Netanyahu, who was accused of hindering the process. Nonetheless, a version of the deal was signed and approved by Israeli security and full cabinet in January 2025.
  6. Despite the agreement, the ceasefire was broken on 18 March 2025 due to Israeli airstrikes responding to Hamas's refusal to release hostages and reject of extension proposals.
  7. In the current latest iteration (August 2025), the proposal calls for the release of half the living Israeli hostages during the 60-day ceasefire period, but Israel, led by Netanyahu, demands full security control over Gaza and no longer accepts partial agreements.

While the ceasefire proposal has a framework aiming for hostage release, prisoner exchange, cessation of hostilities, and eventual reconstruction, political disagreements and security conditions continue to complicate full implementation.

This news about the ceasefire proposal comes from news agencies AFP and Reuters.

  1. The employment policy of the transitional authority, as outlined in the ceasefire proposal for the Gaza Strip, should prioritize the rebuilding of infrastructure and economy to facilitate a sustainable peace and long-term reconstruction.
  2. The community policy within the ceasefire proposal encompasses the end of Israeli occupation and siege of Gaza, ensuring general news about war-and-conflicts in the region is minimized, and politics are conducted in a manner that fosters cooperation and peaceful resolution.
