Hamas acknowledges a favorable reaction towards the proposed temporary truce agreement with Israel.
The Middle East is witnessing a new development in the long-standing Israel-Hamas conflict, as a temporary ceasefire proposal has been put forward. The proposal, which includes phased hostage releases, humanitarian aid, and negotiations towards a permanent ceasefire, is being mediated by third parties.
The proposal suggests that Hamas would release 10 living hostages and return 15-18 bodies of deceased hostages during the 60-day ceasefire period. The release will be staggered, with some hostages freed on the first day, and others over the course of the truce to maintain negotiation momentum. Estimates indicate that there are approximately 20 living hostages still in Hamas captivity.
Israel would reciprocate with the release of an agreed number of Palestinian prisoners, managed discreetly to avoid political backlash. The Israeli forces would also withdraw to a buffer zone along Gaza's borders with Israel and Egypt. Significant humanitarian aid would be allowed into Gaza during the truce, managed by UN agencies and the Palestinian Red Crescent.
Negotiations for a permanent agreement would begin within 60 days, addressing long-term security arrangements, redeployment of Israeli forces, and post-war Gaza governance. Both sides expect that a successful temporary ceasefire will pave the way to a permanent resolution.
However, there are still points of contention. Hamas has demanded guarantees that Israel will move on to later phases of the ceasefire, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has found the changes Hamas is requesting unacceptable.
The war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7, 2023, following a Hamas-led terrorist attack on southern Israel that resulted in over 1,200 deaths and hundreds of hostages. The current ceasefire proposal comes more than 20 months into the conflict.
The final proposal was delivered to Hamas by representatives from Qatar and Egypt, following a meeting between Trump officials and Israeli officials. Hamas has submitted a positive response to the proposal, but the release of the 10 living hostages and 15 bodies will be staggered over the 60-day period the temporary ceasefire is in effect.
A negotiating team from Israel is set to leave for Doha, Qatar, on Sunday to continue negotiations on the proposal. It remains to be seen whether both parties can reach an agreement and bring an end to the conflict that has claimed nearly 56,000 lives and over 131,000 injuries in Gaza.
