Hamas Accepts New Ceasefire Proposal for Gaza, According to Hamas Representative
In a significant development, Hamas has agreed to a new ceasefire proposal aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The proposal, which includes major concessions, has been accepted without any amendments by the Palestinian group [1][2][3]. However, as of late August 2025, Israel has not officially responded to the proposal, leading to a stalemate in negotiations.
The 60-day ceasefire agreement, brokered by Egypt and Qatar alongside the United States, outlines several key terms. These include a cessation of Israeli military operations in Gaza, the release of approximately half of the approximately 50 Israeli captives believed to be alive, and the establishment of buffer zones extending up to 1,500 meters inside Gaza [1][2][3]. Additionally, Israel would release a large number of Palestinians held in various detention facilities, and there would be provisions for aid entry into Gaza.
Despite Hamas's acceptance, Israel has remained noncommittal, causing frustration among mediators. Qatar has called on the international community to pressure Israel to engage with the proposal [3]. Egypt and Qatar have sent the proposal to Israel, and the ball is now in Israel's court.
The lack of Israeli response has been interpreted as unwillingness to reach an agreement. Historically, attempts at ceasefires have been hindered by Israeli political decisions, including resistance from former Prime Minister Netanyahu and military operations such as the Rafah invasion in 2024 [4].
The ongoing conflict in Gaza has taken a heavy toll on civilians. At least 20 people were killed in Gaza on Monday, according to the civil defense agency, but independent verification is difficult due to media restrictions and access issues [5]. Israel's offensive in Gaza has killed over 62,004 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to figures from the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza [5].
Egypt is willing to join a potential international force in Gaza, but only with a UN Security Council resolution and a "political horizon" [6]. Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani is visiting Gaza to apply maximum pressure for a deal [6].
It is important to note that the proposed deal does not mean an immediate end to hostilities. The remaining captives would be released in a second phase, with negotiations for a broader settlement to follow [7]. The ceasefire proposal was made after more than 22 months of war, and it is hoped that this agreement can bring a lasting peace to the region.
