Hamas accepts a Gaza truce proposal that closely resembles the plan proposed by the US special envoy, as stated by Qatar.

The latest ceasefire proposal for Gaza, which is almost identical to the one proposed by US special envoy Steve Witkoff, has been rejected by Israel. The Israeli government is demanding the release of all Israeli hostages held by Hamas before agreeing to any ceasefire extension.

The proposed ceasefire, if accepted, would last for 60 days. It includes a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, currently controlling 75% of the enclave, and the release of 200 Palestinian prisoners in Israel, along with an unspecified number of imprisoned women and minors by Hamas.

This proposal, which was accepted by Hamas in May 2024 and supported by the UN Security Council in June 2024, was aimed at ending the ongoing conflict that began in October 2023. The war has left swathes of Gaza razed to the ground, resulting in the death of 1,200 people and the capture of about 250 as hostages following Hamas's attacks.

Negotiations for the implementation of this ceasefire have been fraught with difficulties. Israel, led by Prime Minister Netanyahu, has been accused of hindering the deal, while Hamas has also rejected certain terms. As a result, hostilities resumed, leading to renewed Israeli military action.

Under the ceasefire proposal, more humanitarian aid is expected to enter Gaza, which is increasingly facing famine due to the war. However, the Israeli military campaign in Gaza showed no sign of abating, with at least 20 Palestinians killed on Tuesday. Local health authorities reported that efforts to rescue the trapped individuals in Sabra, where dozens of people are currently trapped due to the shelling, are ongoing.

Qatar has been working with Egypt to mediate between the warring factions and broker a US-backed ceasefire deal for Gaza. The Israeli military is also investigating the report of casualties in Sabra.

It is expected that Israel will respond to the proposal within the next two days. The ceasefire proposal, if implemented, would mark a significant step towards ending the ongoing conflict in Gaza. However, the fate of the hostages and the future of the region remains uncertain.
