Halo Infinite momentarily transforms into Halo 3 for a month, featuring classic game mode: Grifball return.

Get ready for a Halo 3 throwback! Halo Infinite's latest update, dubbed Operation: Legacy, is all about reminding us of the good old days. This event is like a love letter to Halo 3 enthusiasts, reviving features, game modes, and maps that harken back to the golden age of Halo.

Back in the day, Halo 3 was the cream of the crop, setting the bar high with its HD shooter glory. Bungie's first HD shooter was not only the most anticipated game but also over-delivered, especially when it came to multiplayer. It was the pioneer of cool tech like Forge, screenshot, and video creation tools, and it had a fantastic connection with Bungie.net for all those extras. Halo 3's multiplayer was, quite simply, the cherry on top of an incredible game.

But it was Forge that really extended its stay in our hearts because it allowed players to make their own game modes. Some of these homemade creations have since become permanent fixtures in Halo, like Halo Kart— un represented in this Legacy event, unfortunately, but easy to find. Another favorite, however, is making a comeback: Grifball.

Imagine American Football but played with gravity hammers and laser swords. That's Grifball in a nutshell! The Infinite version of Grifball offers wacky physics, ten new arenas, and four modes in both first and third person. The mode also features a speedier gravity hammer, ramped-up hammer physics, and a distinct version of energy swords to "showcase long-range feints," perfect for a dance-off.

Operation: Legacy also includes the popular Delta Arena playlist, versions of Halo 3 maps, Grifball, and some of the coolest helmets from the 2007 era. The Delta playlist offers 11 Halo 3 maps, including Guardian, Narrows, Cold Storage, and Ghost Town, making their debut in Halo Infinite. The playlist maintains the classic Halo 3 vibe with some tweaks, such as:

  • Sprint: Disabled
  • Clamber: Disabled
  • Jump Height: 120%
  • Starting Weapon: MA5K or BR75
  • Secondary Weapon: None
  • Friendly Player Collision: On

The playlist features modes like Slayer, KOTH, Oddball, CTF, One Flag, Assault Neutral Bomb, and Assault One Bomb—all under the "Legacy" banner to reflect the theme and changes.

Remember when Infinite developer 343 Industries changed its name to Halo Studios last year? They also announced a shift in focus towards their future Unreal Engine projects. Pierre Hintze, the studio head, said, "Halo Infinite was the last remnants of our old Halo game-making method. That was our recipe back then, but now we’re changing the recipe." But even after its rocky start, Halo Infinite has become a promising game and continues to impress players with events like this one. The Halo 3 Legacy event is live in Halo Infinite until July 8, so it's time to gear up and rejoin the fight.

  1. Grifball, a fan-favorite game mode featuring gravity hammers and laser swords, returns in Halo Infinite's Operation: Legacy event, allowing players to engage in wacky physics and four modes, both in first and third person.
