AfD Member Halemba Steps Down, Faces Expulsion Proceedings
Daniel Halemba, a Bavarian representative of the right-wing AfD party, gave up all his positions within the party with immediate effect and suspended his membership rights. The move came after accusations of violating party regulations and facing expulsion proceedings. However, Halemba will retain his position in the state parliament, according to a statement he made on Thursday evening.
The AfD's state executive committee discussed expulsion proceedings against Halemba on the same evening. They unanimously agreed to commission lawyer Ferdinand Mang to examine the case, as demanded by the federal executive board. In Munich, state chairman Stephan Protschka confirmed this decision to the German Press Agency, adding that internal investigation processes would commence.
These proceedings stem from Halemba's past violations of AfD regulations, which resulted in admitting members in breach of the party's statutes during state election rallies in Bavaria. Additionally, there are ongoing investigations by the public prosecutor's office in Würzburg regarding his involvement in incitement and the use of anti-constitutional symbols.
The Bavarian Office for the Protection of the Constitution has been monitoring Halemba's fraternity, Teutonia Prag, and the party as a whole since December 2021. During searches at the fraternity's house, police found a guest book containing the phrase "Sieg Heil" signed by Halemba and a printed SS order issued by SS chief Heinrich Himmler in October 1939.
CSU parliamentary group leader Klaus Holetschek expressed dissatisfaction with Halemba's consequences and urged him to promptly resign from his seat in the state parliament. AFD parliamentary group leader Katrin Ebner-Steiner was also urged to take a clear stance on the matter.
Halemba's resignation from all party positions and AfD's subsequent proceedings against him within the state parliament can alter the balance of power. Currently, the AfD and Greens share the same number of MPs, but the AfD's strong percentage result in the state election entitles it to unique benefits. Should the AfD lose members, the Greens could gain this title and influence respective rights.
