Climate Change: Habeck Believes Germany Is On Track to Achieve Climate Targets

In a candid talk in Berlin, Robert Habeck, the Economy and Climate Protection Minister, expressed optimism that Germany is on course to reach its climate objectives. He thinks the past three years will be considered a pivotal moment in German climate policy, primarily due to the tireless efforts of his ministry. Habeck highlighted notable advances in the proliferation of renewable energy sources and a transformation in the construction sector.

As Habeck is expected to step down as minister in the coming weeks, he delivered a retrospective summary of the climate policy over the past three years. He urged the potential future government, consisting of the Union and SPD, to stay committed to the course. However, he acknowledged that they haven't shown in the past their readiness to take bold steps forward. He described the grand coalition as a "world champion" in setting goals but an "amateur league" in execution.

When Habeck assumed office at the end of 2021, he inherited a climate protection deficit of 1.2 billion tons of CO2 by 2030, he revealed. New projection data suggests an impressive buffer of 80 million tons of CO2 by 2030.

Decline in Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The Federal Environment Agency reports a 3.4% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions in Germany to 649 million tons of CO2 equivalents in 2024. Other greenhouse gases are converted to CO2 for easier comparison. The legally permitted, adjusted annual total emission amount of 693.4 million tons of CO2 equivalents will be substantially undercut. The projection data indicates that the objective of reducing emissions by 65% by 2030 compared to 1990 is achievable.

The energy sector is making a disproportionately significant contribution to emission reduction in the individual sectors, according to the data. The transport sector remains the problem child, as "it has completely failed to deliver," said Habeck.
