In the upcoming primary election for governor and other statewide offices in New Mexico, scheduled for June 2, former U.S. Senator Tom Udall has endorsed Deb Haaland in her bid for the gubernatorial race.

Haaland, a former U.S. Interior secretary, served in this role from 2021 until stepping down in January 2023. She has expressed her intention to continue her record of changing the system to ensure every New Mexican has an opportunity to thrive.

Udall, who was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2008 and won re-election in 2014, believes Haaland has the necessary qualities to lead New Mexico and stand against Donald Trump. He decided to endorse due to the high stakes of the 2026 election cycle.

Udall's endorsement comes in a contested Democratic primary, where Haaland is facing competition from candidates like Ken Miyagishima and Sam Bregman. Both Haaland and Bregman have vied for the official support of tribal groups in New Mexico.

Haaland has expressed gratitude for Udall's trust in her gubernatorial bid, citing their past collaboration on conservation initiatives and infrastructure projects. The backing of Udall is the latest endorsement in the race between Haaland and Bregman.

It is worth noting that the race for governor is an open one due to Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham being barred from seeking a third consecutive term. The general election in New Mexico will take place in November.

Udall did not run for a third term in 2020, allowing Ben Ray Luján to win election to the U.S. Senate. His decision to endorse Haaland in the gubernatorial race underscores the importance of the election and the need for strong leadership in New Mexico.

As the primary election approaches, it will be interesting to see how Haaland's campaign unfolds and whether she can secure the Democratic nomination for the 2026 gubernatorial race.
