In the upcoming primary election on June 2, Deb Haaland, a former U.S. Representative, has received the endorsement of Tom Udall, a former U.S. Senator, in her bid for the governorship of New Mexico.

Udall and Haaland were both members of New Mexico's congressional delegation from 2019 through 2020. During their time in office, they worked together on conservation initiatives and infrastructure projects. Haaland has highlighted this past collaboration as a key factor in her decision to run for governor.

Haaland aims to continue her record of changing the system to ensure every New Mexican has an opportunity to thrive. Udall, in endorsing Haaland, praised her as a fighter with compassion, toughness, vision, and experience needed to lead New Mexico and stand up against Donald Trump.

The race for governor is an open one, as Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is barred from seeking a third consecutive term under the state Constitution. Udall did not run for a third term in 2020, paving the way for Ben Ray Luján to win election to the U.S. Senate.

Before Udall declared his support, Haaland was backed by prominent Democratic figures including Senator Martin Heinrich and several local New Mexico Democratic leaders in the 2026 gubernatorial primary. The race also includes Sam Bregman and Ken Miyagishima, who are also seeking the Democratic nomination.

Haaland expressed gratitude for Udall's endorsement, stating it is an honor to have his trust as she runs for governor. The general election will take place in November.

Udall, after stepping down as senator, served as U.S. ambassador to New Zealand under former President Joe Biden. Haaland was appointed as U.S. Interior secretary by Biden and stepped down in January 2021.

This endorsement marks a significant development in the 2026 New Mexico gubernatorial primary, with Haaland and her opponents vying for the opportunity to lead the state.
