Manchester City's Norwegian striker Erling Haaland has been unlucky this season. Despite his impressive track record since joining the Skyblues, the current season has been a struggle. With their Premier League title prospects dwindling, City has one final hopes for glory -- the FA Cup.
This is a bitter pill to swallow for Haaland, who has yet to win the English championship or claim the title of top scorer. With eight goals needed in the last two matchdays to surpass Mo Salah and his Liverpool leading score, it's looking grim. Meanwhile, Salah's chances of scoring again are slim. Haaland summed up his third season in Manchester as "horrific."
The sorrow began as early as late September when Rodri suffered a cruciate ligament injury in the top game against Arsenal. City's loss of their central pivot in midfield left Guardiola's team struggling to keep up with Liverpool, resulting in two 0:2 defeats in direct duels. They also exited the Champions League early, losing to Real Madrid in the playoffs.
"We have to perform better in the big games," Haaland told the BBC. "We weren't stable enough and didn't win enough games. It's as simple as that." He's not making excuses, acknowledging their setbacks, including injuries, but "each of us wasn't good enough."
A Special Farewell for Kevin de Bruyne?
As the reigning champion from 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024, City now has to battle for a spot in the Champions League. Five teams -- Arsenal, Newcastle United, Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Nottingham Forest -- are vying for the remaining two spots.
But Haaland and his teammates still have one title chance left. On Saturday, Manchester City faces Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final. The underdog club, named after the London building that burned down in Hyde Park in 1936, eyes its first title ever.
This Wembley Stadium game is a chance for City to give a fitting send-off to their iconic midfielder, Kevin de Bruyne. The Belgian, who's joining from Wolfsburg in 2015, is about to leave as one of the greatest footballers in City's history. "It would be great if he could leave with a trophy," says Haaland. It would also be a positive conclusion to a season that Haaland otherwise describes as "boring" and "not fun."
